TO PRESERVE AND
SHARE THE TREASURES OF THE PAST
The Townsend Historical Society
was formed in 1896 by a group of people who recognized the importance of saving
the tangible and intangible treasures of Townsend’s past. The
Townsend Historical Society strives to cultivate and encourage interest in the
history of Townsend, by collecting and preserving historical items, artifacts,
books, manuscripts, pamphlets, biographies and anecdotes of Townsend, by
promoting research into Townsend history and it's inhabitants, by owning,
maintaining and restoring properties of historic value, and making them
accessible to public viewing, and by providing educational opportunities such as
site visits and demonstrations for school students, tours and special programs.
In 1973 a permanent home was acquired for the Society, The Reed Homestead,
located at Townsend Harbor.
