The Townsend Historical Society is pleased to announce the second year of its new autumn tradition, the Scarecrow Festival. At the festival, participants will display handmade scarecrows. The festival also features a pie contest, a scavenger hunt, live music, and other seasonal activities.
The 2024 Festival will be held on Saturday, October 5th, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, on the Townsend Common. Setup will begin for participants at 10:00 AM. Volunteers and THS Board members will be present on the Common starting at 8:00 AM for event prep.
Scarecrow Contest Entry:
Scarecrows may be registered for entry in one of three categories.
– Business/Organization: $50
– Family: $25
– Individual: $15
One entry per individual/group/organization, please. Entrants must register using either a physical or online form (see below). Payment is required in order to reserve your spot in the scarecrow contest.
Rules and Additional Information:
Entries must be hand-made. Be as creative as possible. No political or overly violent scarecrows, yard inflatables, commercial costumes, rubber or plastic masks, perishable goods, glass, or items requiring electricity. Battery operated items are permitted.
Participants may arrive the morning of the event, beginning at 10:00 AM, or earlier if desired.
Entries will be judged during the Festival. Each category (business/organization, family, and individual) will have one winner. Winners will receive a trophy and a gift card.
The Festival will conclude with an auction, for those who wish to donate their scarecrows.

We encourage you to drop by our office at the Reed House and hand-deliver completed forms with payment to save on postage. Otherwise, completed forms with payment may be mailed to PO Box 95, Townsend, MA 01469.
Online Registration and Payment:
You can register online (and pay via Paypal) using the links below. Please submit your online registration in conjunction with an online payment, unless intending to mail payment (which can be indicated in the registration form).
Pie Contest Entry:
Pies may be registered for entry in one of three categories.
– Apple Pie: $10
– Pumpkin Pie: $10
– Other Pie: $10
One pie entry per category, please. If desired, you are welcome to bake pies to enter into multiple categories. Limit 3 pie registrations per registrant. Entrants to the pie contest must register prior to the event. Payment is required in order to reserve your spot in the pie contest.
