Jefferson’s marinated asparagus About Thomas Jefferson About Monticello
May Trivia Question: Asparagus soup was a favorite dish of Thomas Jefferson. But asparagus is not native to the Americas. On what continents did it grow as a native, how did it get here, and why does it grow wild in the US now?
Perhaps the Townsend Historical Society’s most treasured possession is – the Rufus Porter mural!
Rufus Porter was born May 1st, 1792 not long before the Reed House was first built. Who was Rufus Porter? He is perhaps best known to the people of Townsend, and especially the many 3rd/5th grade students who have toured the Reed House over the years, as an itinerant painter of murals who painted his famous mural in the Reed House between 1830 -1835. Townsend can be extremely proud that this mural has been kept in pristine condition for nearly 200 years. It should be treasured by the community and seen by all.
