‘Old Burial Ground, Townsend’, an amazing study of the Burial Ground. Well worth taking the time to read through. The original document is housed in the Townsend Historical Society’s Collections Vault. Old Burial Ground, Townsend
Old cemeteries in New England are amazing places to explore. Full of the history of those who have passed on, family histories, famous people, strange symbols, and stories on the gravestones such as epitaphs. The stones can also be a source for epidemiological research investigating epidemics, plagues, diseases and much more. They are also a source for scientific research such as the effect of acid rain on some headstone material.
Epitaphs can be a study on their own ranging from the tragic to the hilarious, well worth ‘exploring’.
Changes have taken place over the centuries, from materials used for the headstones, changing religious beliefs, attitudes towards cemeteries. Some of the modern uses include having weddings, gatherings of many kinds and even having ‘Grandma’s favorite recipe inscribed on the Headstone. It helps people remember their loved ones and never lose that recipe.
