Employment Type: Part-time (10-30 hours per week), Non-Exempt, At-will; Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience.

In this exciting newly-created position, you will drive operational excellence and bold strategic growth. You’ll have the opportunity to maintain and improve our core function of preserving and sharing Townsend’s history, and also to help bring to fruition our vision of making Old Harbor Village a compelling destination for visitors from near and far.

These resources will include the Reed Homestead with its world-class Rufus Porter mural, a working grist mill, a museum of New England industry in the Cooperage, the Copeland Cooper’s Shed, a partnership with the Harbor Hose Co. 3 Museum of fire equipment, the newly renovated Harbor Church, and a newly donated house across the river with museums focused on Charlotte’s Web and Townsend historical artifacts, along with increased office space and a new vault.

Supporting you in the operations and growth of the Townsend Historical Society and the Old Harbor Village will be a team of hard-working volunteers, board members and general members, along with a part-time employee to aid in data management.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Operations support for the mission
  • Interact with members and the public to support our mission of preserving and sharing Townsend’s history, both in person and via the internet.
  • Support the cataloging and digitization of the Townsend Historical Society’s collection of artifacts, with the goal of ultimately sharing our PastPerfect database on-line with all members.
  • Support the various events the Townsend Historical Society runs each year to further our mission, such as educational outreach and the arts and craft fair.
  • Oganize tours on a regular basis, both to provide outreach and enhance revenue.
  • Provide general office operations support.
  • Assist in the transition of operations from the Reed Homestead to 16 South Street, including new vault set up and organization.
  1. Supporting the creation of Old Harbor Village
  • Work with the Board and subcommittees in the planning and implementation of each of the various components of Old Harbor Village, such as the Grist Mill, the Cooperage, the Charlotte’s Web museum, and the Townsend history museum.
  • As various components of Old Harbor Village become available, expand tours to include these additions.
  • Assist in marketing Old Harbor Village tours and visits, increasing our revenue stream.

Skills desired

  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, volunteers, and Board members; ability to communicate effectively with members and the public
  • Experience running and helping grow a business
  • Computer skills
    • Experience with historic catalog databases, PastPerfect web edition preferred
    • Experience with social media, including Facebook
    • Experience with web site maintenance, WordPress preferred
    • Experience with design software such as Canva
    • Experience with office tools such as Microsoft Office
  • A strong interest in sharing and learning about history
